This week we’re continuing our conversation to supply our audience with more information about what can happen when your home isn’t properly insulated. Like thermal bridging, there’s a pathway created when both materials and workmanship are substandard. However, this process isn’t forming a thermal bridge.
What is air infiltration? How does it happen?
Air infiltration is when outside air molecules are entering the home through various channels to mix with inside air. These channels include:
- Floors
- Walls
- Ceiling
- Fans and Vents
- Windows
- Doors
- Ducts
- Plumbing Penetrations
- Fireplaces
- Electrical Outlets
If these channels are poorly closed off, the air can leak through those openings. This exchange can result in a degradation of air quality and overall comfort of your home. When winter comes, the cold air seeps through. To compensate and keep warm one might overrun the HVAC system. This doesn’t help the planet or your wallet!
How do you prevent air infiltration?
These channels need to be sealed off properly. However, problem is much larger than that. Each channel above listed has potential for mishap. Not to mention inconsistency of the previous builders’ skill. The only way to guarantee prevention is with experienced builders, and reliable materials.
